Invention Convention

Thank you to the Invention Convention judges for giving their time to 2nd – 10th grade Computer Technology Program (CTP) students from Cornerstones’ Cedar Ridge Community Center who created inventions from recyclable materials and items found around their home.

Shark Tank
Thank you to the Herndon Neighborhood Resource Center’s Shark Tank judges. The student’s were judged on creativity of the product/service; success of presentation/pitch; best answers to shark questions.

Our most heartfelt thanks to the volunteers recently recognized by Cornerstones at the Volunteer Fairfax Awards Breakfast:

  • Our AMAZING Front Desk Volunteers at Embry Rucker Community Shelter for their combined efforts to keep the shelter running smoothly, and for providing a welcoming place for all who come through our doors
  • The wonderful young people and parents of LE4P for their continuing efforts to assist us with bagged meals and donations
  • Vince Sescoe for his dedicated service to our employment counseling program at Connections for Hope
  • Ginny Pyster for her invaluable organizational efforts at our annual donation drives
  • Carolina Calderon, winner of the Integrate Award at Volunteer Fairfax, for her awe-inspiring efforts to help at both our ASAPP food pantry and the Herndon Neighborhood Resource Center

And to ALL our unsung volunteer heroes who show up each day for both continuing and one-time volunteer opportunities, a million thanks to you!

We’d also like to recognize:

  • 3 C’s Ministries and Janet and Ray Clark for entertaining and inspiring our clients with their feats of strength both of body and of spirit
  • Andrew Chapel United Methodist Church for catering and games night
  • BRAWS—Bringing Resources to Area Women’s Shelters for the supplies for our young ladies
  • Kathy Brennan and the Wondrous Wee Play network of moms who sponsored all our shelter moms for dinner and gifts on Moms’ Night Out before Mother’s Day.
  • Capital Harmonia for an inspiring choral performance to lift up our clients and staff at the shelter
  • Daughters of the American Revolution for a book donation drive for Embry Rucker Community Shelter and the Herndon Neighborhood Resource Center
  • The Eliassen Group for a productive  afternoon of cleaning and organizing supplies on the family side of the shelter
  • Fannie Mae employees for their enormous impact on their day of service to the shelter
  • Floris United Methodist Church Mothers of Preschoolers for providing gifts and childcare for the Mother’s Night Out event
  • Fox Mill Elementary School SCA officers and advisors for coming to learn about the needs of our shelter and its clients
  • Herndon Fortnightly Club for collecting books for Herndon Neighborhood Resource Center
  • Herndon Ladies Brunch for collecting needed items for the shelter
  • Holy Cross Lutheran Church for a “Gloves and Undies” donation drive to assist our clients
  • Caroline Martel for donating gift cards she collected at her birthday in lieu of gifts for herself
  • The Northern Virginia Pro Bono Law Center for providing free legal services to clients at Cornerstones
  • Reston Community Church for their monthly games nights
  • SEWA International and NAMAMA for catering and gift card donations
  • Salesforce for providing volunteers and a cash donation to cover the cost of lunch catering

The following new or occasional groups and individuals came out to provide sumptuous meals for our shelter in recent months. These are in addition to our steadfast regular catering groups that assist us throughout the year. Our thanks to you all!

  • Nysmith School for the Gifted for hosting a Help the Homeless Walk supporting the Embry Rucker Community Shelter
